Medical Tourism in Thailand (makeup beauty tips)

With its throbbing international capital, endless strings of islands, and coveted tropical climate, Thailand has long been at the top of the list of desirable tourist destinations. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is one of the only countries in South-East Asia never to have been colonized by foreign rule, giving it a distinct and rich culture. Thailand offers tourists a wide array of pursuits to entice just about any travelerfrom the energizing nightlife in Bangkok, to the traditions of the Hill-Tribes in the North, and the relaxation found on one of its many white sand beaches, Thailand is sure to delight whomever crosses its borders.

The jet-set and backpackers alike have blazed a trail through this tropical wonderland for decades, which is a benefit to both the Thai economy and the curious wanderers. Thailand is now distinguishing itself in a new and rapidly growing travel niche: that of medical tourism.

Medical tourism, which quite simply, is traveling to a foreign destination to obtain medical treatment, is not a new concept. Health travel can be documented as far back as the ancient Greeks who would travel to the Mediterranean for treatment and relaxation. Wealthy eighteenth-century Europeans also partook of treatment abroad–an early form of health travel and medical tourism, in the form of visits to sanatoriums for a break and relaxation, and to spa towns known for the healing properties of their mineral waters.

The exorbitant cost of private health care in the west, as well as lengthy waits for many procedures, are forcing an increasing number of people to leave their home countries in search of affordable medical treatment. Thailand is at the top of the list for health treatment because of the wide variety of services that are available, the quickness with which services can be obtained, and the comparatively low price for procedures.

In the past two decades, cosmetic surgery paved the way for medical treatment abroad: it provided a way for people to have a holiday while they underwent a nip or a tuck, and to return looking revived and refreshed. Thailand became a popular destination for these cosmetic holidays because of its tropical climate and idyllic scenery. But, as health care costs in the west soar, and waiting time for many procedures grow longer each month, Thailand has expanded the number of services it offers, and has distinguished itself as one of the leading destinations for medical tourism.

There is an extensive list of health travel treatments available in Thailand. Everything from cosmetic procedures, LASIK eye surgery, orthopedic operations such as knee and hip replacements, to more aggressive treatment for cancer, organ transplants, cardiac surgery, and even drug and alcohol rehabilitation can be found here. Thailand also has a host of alternative and indigenous medical treatments that many people seek as an option for treating an illness. Thai massage for example, which is a very specific and energetic type of massage is a helpful way to augment other medical procedures.

Detractors of treatment abroad will say that the quality of care and safety standards in other countries, particularly third world countries like Thailand, are simply not as good as what you will find in the Western world. This is patently untrue. There are international agencies that regulate medical tourism, as well as companies that put together medical tourism packages only with approved and accredited doctors and hospitals. Many of Thailands physicians have received their degrees and post-degree training in North America and Europe. Thus, they are familiar with the quality of care expected by Western patients, and this helps assure patients that their treatment abroad will be of the same quality that they would receive in their home countries.

The standards of health care do vary from country to country, and each country has an accreditation and standardization system to ensure a basic level of care and quality. As medical tourism has increased, there are new international accreditation standards that maintain cross-border standards. The function of such agencies are that of a watch-dog; to ensure that you get the same quality of care when you travel for treatment abroad that you would get in your home country. Many of Thailands major hospitals have been certified by the International Organization for Standardization. If you are concerned about standards and quality of health (as you should be when undergoing any treatment), you may want to hire a company to put together a medical tourism package for you. These companies fully vet and endorse the hospitals and agencies with which they contract, easing the peace of mind of the patient.

Just as the quality of hospitals varies in your home country, it does in Thailand as well. For instance, if you are in the United States and have cancer, the Mayo Clinic is one of the top places to go, but you are unlikely to get Mayo Clinic caliber treatment at a small country hospital. Not all hospitals in any country are created equal, but it is possible to get Western quality health care in Thailand, and this may be a more beneficial avenue to pursue than to get treatment in your home country.
